Dr. Weiss’ career has focused on treatment and clinical research with substance-dependent patients. He has received numerous NIH grants, developing integrated group therapy, an evidence-based treatment for co-occurring bipolar and substance use disorders, and leading a multi-site treatment study of prescription opioid dependence. He has authored over 300 publications, including several books, and was vice chair of the American Psychiatric Association Task Force on Practice Guidelines for Patients with Substance Use Disorders. Dr. Weiss was named a member of honor by the Spanish Society for Dual Disorders in 2011, and has received numerous other awards, including the H. David Archibald Award for Outstanding Research and/or Practice in the Addictions from The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto (2007), the Jack H. Mendelson Research Award from McLean Hospital (2012), and the Dan Anderson Research Award from the Hazelden Foundation (2012).

Our Scientific Panel of Advisors was extremely impressed with the scientific rigor of this study, its two phase methodology, and the fact it examined extended buprenorphine maintenance," stated Dr. Audrey Klein, director of the Butler Center for Research at the Hazelden Foundation. "His current work on the use of long term buprenorphine is innovative, timely, and essential given the current epidemic of prescription opioid addiction and increase in deaths related to opioid overdose.

Particular focuses are in molecular neuroscience and its relationship to gene activities during brain repair. My area of achievements include the first demonstration of somatic gene mutation in the brain after cerebral ischemia and I was awarded two R01 (NS034810 and NS045845) and two awards from American Heart Association. These awards lead to the development of brain probes with a potential to view gene action in live brains (R21NS057556). We have participated in at least three workshops sponsored by the NIH I have developed a novel technique for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of gene transcripts in living subjects. This technique permits targeting, imaging, labeling and manipulation of intracellular gene transcript in live brains. As such, it represents an area of research that is poised to become the next frontier of MRI. The hospital has filed four patent applications based on our important inventions. The invention involves making a nanoparticle of less than 30 nanometers in diameter, and is composed of short nucleic acid (siDNA or siRNA) with sequence targeting specific messenger RNA (the target) and an MR contrast agent (tracer). We have demonstrated that short DNA with proper sequence will target mRNA at low dose for non-invasive imaging using MRI; regulate protein expression at high dose for gene knockdown in the brain. We now have brain probes for angiogenesis, gliosis, and gender difference in gene activities of live brains. High resolution MR imaging of intracellular RNA for cell typing holds promises to translate molecular biology into live subjects for real time, longitudinal in vivo imaging. This design should have potential for pre-clinical and perhaps clinical applications, once it is validated for application in living brains of higher species than mice.

Dr. Haddad has been studying, smoking and tobacco control regarding Arab-American youth and young adults since 1999. Specifically, her research focuses on the predictors and barriers of tobacco smoking behavior and the development of effective interventions to increase cessation rates among Arab American and under-served populations.

My laboratory uses chemical synthesis (organic and bio-organic) to produce known and novel compounds which are subsequently screened (in vitro) for their biological activity. Drug oral bioavailability may be influenced by low solubility, intrinsic instability, low membrane permeability, high first pass metabolism, and/or active excretion across the small intestine back into the intestinal lumen via efflux pumps. Consequently, we are interested and conduct fundamental research in drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and toxicity.

'Research' activities include: i) Medicinal Chemistry - rational drug design and Structure-Activity Relationship (SAR) elucidation; ii) computational chemistry; iii) developing novel technology to improve drug oral bioavailability; and iv) identifying new bio-analytical methodology.

Janice M. Brown has more than 18 years of professional experience in etiology, prevention, and early intervention research on substance use and abuse issues. Her research has focused primarily on young adult populations (ages 18 to 25) and has included such issues as transitions to college life, alcohol use epidemiology, alcohol use in high-risk situations, self-regulation, and gender differences. Dr. Brown's work with young adult military populations has examined the role of stress in workplace functioning, the use of alcohol and risks associated with heavy drinking, and alcohol reduction interventions. Dr. Brown is the author of numerous articles, chapters, and technical reports on alcohol use issues. Her federally funded research has included projects offering brief motivational interventions to alcohol-abusing U.S. Air Force personnel and to freshmen college students, military epidemiological studies, and web-based intervention studies.

Alcohol addiction is a very complex psychiatric disease with psychological, behavioural and somatic components. For two decades I am working on animal models of excessive alcohol drinking and alcohol addiction in order to decipher neurobiological bases of the pathology and to find new therapeutics. As addiction is considered as a pathological memory process we investigate synaptic plasticity changes and real time measurement of dopamine transmission to challenge current hypotheses of addiction. My lab has now set up an original model of binge drinking in rat using an ethanol operant self-administration procedure and the gold standard to investigate addictive behaviour. In the latter model rodents are made dependent upon alcohol and display both physical and psychological signs of dependence. In this model the vulnerability to develop the more servere phenotype of dependence is explored. We are also interested by investigating the pathophysiology of alcoholic liver disease. An important question is also the long term impact of early life ethanol exposure (in utero and adolescence) on brain functioning and vulnerability to addiction. We use both clinical and preclinical studies to answer this question. Recently we have also set up an animal model of the comorbidity schizophrenia-alcohol abuse in order to investigate the neurobiological bases of the comorbidity.

My research focuses on the relations between neuroplasticity and neurotransmission that can be revealed by mapping radioligand binding and the neuroplastic changes of brain functions. The investigations explore the relation between energy metabolism and neurotransmission by recording the changes of energy metabolism and consciousness under pharmacological and other manipulations. I use PET to understand 1) the synthesis of radioligand and tracer molecules that match the neurotransmitter molecules and the behavior of these transmitters under different functional conditions of the brain, normal as well as pathological, and 2) the spatial and temporal relations among changes of cerebral blood flow, which is commonly used as a measure of brain work, and the cerebral oxygen consumption rate, which is the precise measure of this work. My collaborations focus on experiments with volunteer subjects and patients that explore the lesions and degeneration of brain in disorders such as epilepsy, ludomania, Parkinson's disease, stroke, depression, and somatization disorders, as well as disorders related to addiction. Experiments explore the restructuring of neuronal networks that follows when sensory activity is processed by healthy subjects or volunteers suffering from inborn or acquired lesions.

Our group has been studying the treatment and pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Our work involves the use of various psychopharmacological probes (ketamine, delta-9-THC, iomazenil, etc) to evaluate the contributions of various neurotransmitter systems (NMDA, cannabinoid, GABA, etc) to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia; laboratory studies of comorbid substance abuse in schizophrenia, (alcohol, cannabis and nicotine) and clinical trials with novel agents for schizophrenia.

In 2010, he was the Director of Psychiatric Services at Millcreek Community Hospital, and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Lake Eric College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA. Currently, he is the Genesee County Community Mental Health Medical Director in Flint; MI. Bradley specializes in addiction psychiatry. He completed a Psychiatry Residency at the University of Michigan. During his residency, he carried out research on affective disorders and substance abuse. Frances Rudnick Levin, MD is the Kennedy-Leavy Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University and Acting Director, Division on Substance Abuse, Director of the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Levin graduated from Cornell University Medical College and completed her psychiatric residency at the New York Hospital-Payne Whitney Clinic. She is the principal investigator on several federally funded grants, a T32 NIDA funded Substance Abuse Research Fellowship, a K24 Mid Career Investigator Award and collaborates on several other grants. Her research interests include pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatment interventions for cocaine and marijuana abuse, and treatment approaches for substance abusers with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and other psychiatric illnesses. Dr. Levin has over 170 articles and book chapters and serves on several advisory panels. She is an editorial board member of three journals, past President of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and currently serves as the Chair of the APA council on addiction psychiatry.
